The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Alan Arthur Lichtenberg (ASN: 0-63892), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 28 July 1952, Lieutenant Lichtenberg volunteered to accompany a relief party which was to attempt to reestablish physical contact with a friendly outpost near Koyangdae, Korea, that had become isolated by the flooding of the Imjin River. As the party endeavored to swim up the river, in order to skirt a bordering mine field, one of the volunteers was drowned in the raging current in spite of the heroic attempts on the part of Lieutenant Lichtenberg to save him. Realizing that this route would be impassable, Lieutenant Lichtenberg unhesitatingly volunteered to assist in clearing a safe lane through the mine field. Cautiously they probed a path through the mined area, and though subjected to enemy artillery and mortar fire, they determinedly continued clearing a path through the mine field and marking it with torn bits of clothing. After some 200 yards of probing they reached the other side of the mine field; thereby establishing a route over which the observation post could be supplied and wounded evacuated. Lieutenant Lichtenberg’s outstanding gallantry and untiring devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
