The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert M. Letterman (ASN: RA-14272500), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 16 November 1950, Corporal Letterman was a squad leader in a patrol operating in the vicinity of Toryom-ni, Korea. When the patrol while crossing a clearing, became the target of heavy enemy automatic weapons fire, Corporal Letterman unhesitatingly ordered his squad to return the fire from its dispersed position. Disregarding his personal safety and a painful leg wound inflicted by the enemy, Corporal Letterman supervised his squad’s withdrawal to concealed positions before obeying his patrol leader’s command to return to the rear for medical attention. In the action, Corporal Letterman personally killed three members of the enemy force. Corporal Letterman’s splendid execution of his responsibilities as a leader evidenced by his gallant actions on this occasion, reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
