The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Medical Service Corps) Jerry Tyrus Lee (ASN: 0-5343505), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 13 May 1969. First Lieutenant Lee distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an unarmed medical evacuation helicopter in the Republic of Vietnam. At 1245 hours on the cited date, Lieutenant Lee received an urgent request to extract six seriously wounded soldiers from an area five miles west of A Loui Airstrip, A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Because the jungle terrain made it impossible to land the aircraft, Lieutenant Lee had to use a hoist with a stokes litter to extract the wounded. After coordinating his mission instructions, he skillfully maneuvered his aircraft into the proper position above the patients and instructed his crew to lower the litter to the ground. At this time, enemy forces near the right side of the aircraft fired a rocket propelled grenade at the unarmed aircraft. It entered through the open cargo door and exploded, causing the aircraft to crash, mortally wounding Lieutenant Lee and two of his crewmen. Lieutenant Lee’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
