The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George P. Lee (ASN: RA-18365978), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 18 September 1951, Sergeant Lee was a member of a mine clearing detail which was clearing the way for assault elements of an armored task force driving deep into enemy territory near Hat-o-dong, Korea. Advancing carefully down the road which was continually swept by hostile artillery, mortar, and automatic-weapons fire, he skillfully removed mines from the path of the advancing tanks. During an exceptionally heavy mortar barrage, Sergeant Lee observed a comrade who had been wounded and, running across 50 yards of fire-swept terrain, he removed the wounded man to safety and rendered first aid. On one occasion he volunteered to remove unexploded mines from directly under two disabled tanks which at the time were being fired on by enemy anti-tank guns. Sergeant Lee’s gallantry and untiring devotion to duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
