The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Thomas J. Kover (ASN: RA-15459164), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 223d Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Punch Bowl, Korea, on 1 June to 2 June 1953. When a numerically superior enemy force attacked his platoon’s positions, Sergeant Kover was in the direct avenue of approach. As the enemy began to infiltrate the trenches of his company, Sergeant Kover unleashed a murderous barrage of fire with his recoilless rifle upon the advancing foe. As the enemy forced themselves closer, Sergeant Kover’s position came under an intense concentration of enemy fire. Braving the direct fire, Sergeant Kover continued his murderous fire into the onrushing enemy, leaving his position only when it became necessary to engage the enemy in bitter hand-to-hand combat. During the heat of battle, Sergeant Kover was instrumental in the evacuation of many of his comrades. The superior bravery displayed by Sergeant Kover inflicted numerous casualties on the enemy and prevented a serious breakthrough. Sergeant Kover’s gallant performance and inspiring devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army.
