The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Edwin Bartlett Kerr (ASN: 0-27796), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 August 1951 in the vicinity of Tumil-li, Korea. On this date during an assault to secure a strategic enemy-held hill, Company E met heavy enemy resistance. Captain Kerr, company commander, repeatedly exposed himself to intense hostile fire in order to better deploy his men in their attack. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he advanced to the most forward element of his unit, directing the attack and assisting in caring for the wounded. During the encounter, due to the loss of its crew, Captain Kerr assumed the position of a machine gunner and delivered accurate and effective fire upon the enemy, inflicting numerous casualties. His courageous actions and leadership ability inspired his men to continue in the assault and successfully secure their objective. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Kerr on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
