The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edwin Lyle Kennedy (ASN: 0-62590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 12 December 1950, near Chigyong, Korea, Company C’s platoons were located on prominent terrain features approximately two miles apart. While returning from the company command post, to his platoon, Lieutenant Kennedy came upon twelve enemy soldiers observing his platoon. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, he fearlessly opened fire at a range of thirty yards, killing one of the enemy, wounding another, and scattering the remainder. The enemy attempted to surround Lieutenant Kennedy. At this critical point his carbine ceased to function. As one of the enemy soldiers rushed him from the rear, Lieutenant Kennedy promptly clubbed the man to death with his carbine. Immediately grabbing the enemy’s automatic weapon, he sprayed the remaining enemy soldiers with heavy fire, causing them to flee. The exceptional and outstanding courage displayed by Lieutenant Kennedy reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
