The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) George Salley Jones, III (ASN: 0-27569), United States Army, for action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 17 March 1953 17 March 1953, in the vicinity of Sami-chon, North Korea. During the early morning hours on that date, the enemy launched a concentrated attack and by sheer force of numbers had succeeded in overrunning the positions of one friendly platoon. Moving out under intense enemy fire, Captain Jones occupied an important observation post in order to relay information pertinent to the situation. Realizing the enemy continued to occupy key positions among friendly bunkers and trenches, he volunteered to lead troops in a sweep of the area. When given permission, he personally led two squads of reinforcements through heavy mortar and artillery fire and commenced flushing out the enemy. With the aid of a flame thrower carried up by Captain Jones and under his active participation and direction, the group moved through the fire swept area and completely neutralized many of the dug in Chinese. Throughout this action, Captain Jones displayed complete disregard for his own safety by continually exposing himself in order to better direct the operations, and as a result of his courageous leadership the friendly position was secured. The gallantry in action displayed by Captain Jones on this occasion was of indispensable value and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
