The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Eads Graham Hardaway (ASN: 0-20855), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France. Lieutenant Colonel Hardaway’s battalion was given the mission of spearheading an attack against the enemy after the bombardment of the enemy’s position by Allied aircraft. During the bombardment many of the bombs fell short and many of his key personnel, including four company commanders, became casualties. Despite these crippling losses, Lieutenant Colonel Hardaway, by his superior leadership and personal bravery, effected an immediate reorganization of his command and moved into the attack. When the attack threatened to lose its momentum, due to deadly fire from well-fortified and dug-in enemy positions, Lieutenant Colonel Hardaway’s brilliant and courageous actions kept the pressure on the enemy which so effectively broke the enemy’s main line of resistance and brought about a successful completion of his battalion’s mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Hardaway, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
