Exley, United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 12 Feb. 1951, in the vicinity of Hoengsong. Korea. First Lieutenant Exley was serving as a forward observer with the 23rd ROK Regiment when the enemy closed to within 20 yards of his position, using hand grenades, automatic weapons and small arms. Gathering together his men, he led them to safety through intense fire. After seeing that his men had been cared for, although himself wounded, First Lieutenant Exley refused aid and organized a new forward observer team to return to the front and bring effective artillery fire upon the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant (Infantry) Exley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
