The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Francis D. Evers (ASN: 0-1298649), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 28 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kujan-dong, Korea. On that date elements of his regiment were subjected to an overwhelming enemy attack and were forced to organize a perimeter defense on two knolls. Captain Evers assumed command of those forces and, under heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire, personally led a counterattack to seize commanding ground on his right flank. He held his position against incessant enemy attacks until all ammunition was exhausted. Fearlessly moving through the fire-swept terrain he organized his troops for a withdrawal and skillfully led them through enemy lines to the safety of friendly positions. The gallantry displayed on this occasion by Captain Evers reflects the highest credit upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
