The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class John H. Evans (ASN: NG-25317922), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 5th Regimental Combat Team, 24th Infantry Division, in action near Yulgol, Korea, on 14 January 1951. His patrol had the mission of penetrating into enemy-held territory to learn the strength of the opposing forces. As the friendly troops approached the enemy positions, the foe subjected them to an intense, murderous concentration of machine gun fire. Realizing the dire physical danger to his comrades, Sergeant First Class Evans unhesitatingly and with utter disregard for his own safety exposed himself to draw the enemy fire so that his comrades could deliver more effective fire on the hostile soldiers. He continuously moved about the area in order to direct the fire of the friendly troops. As a result of his accomplishment the enemy hordes were routed from their positions and the friendly patrol withdrew to return to its unit with the vital information it was sent out to obtain. Sergeant Evans’ gallant action, outstanding leadership and selfless performance of duty reflect the highest credit on himself and the United States Infantry.
