The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dell G. Evans (ASN: 0-965713), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 27 November 1950, the rifle company which Lieutenant Evans’ mortar platoon was supporting bore the brunt of a determined enemy attack in the vicinity of Ipsok, Korea. When the supply of mortar ammunition was depleted following a 500-round barrage, he deployed his platoon as riflemen and moved them to the right flank of the perimeter. Obtaining a supply of grenades, he led his platoon in a flanking attack which eliminated the hostile threat in that sector. Lieutenant Evans’ courage, leadership and notable military skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
