The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) David E. Etzold (ASN: 0-62251), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 September 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, Company L, 3d Battalion, occupying defensive positions on Hill 284, was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force and hard pressed to stave off envelopment under the accelerated hostile assaults. In the face of intense fire initiated by the enemy, Lieutenant Etzold, a forward observer, although able to fire prepared concentrations from the relative safety of his observation post, voluntarily advanced to an exposed position in order to observe the effects of his fire. For a period of four hours, he fearlessly adjusted artillery fire upon the enemy build-up areas and supporting weapons emplacements with great accuracy. Lieutenant Etzold’s gallantry, courage, and professional skill were a material contribution in repulsing the foe and reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
