The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jackson R. W. Eley (ASN: RA-15275972), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Heavy Mortar Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 10 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hyuonpung, Korea. On this date, he was attached to a rifle company as a forward observer for the purpose of directing mortar fire. The company was attacked by enemy forces which overran a machine gun position and broke through the perimeter defense of one of the platoons. Although wounded, he voluntarily crawled over the skyline and back to the platoon Command Post to inform the platoon leader of the situation. As he reached the Command Post, he observed an enemy hand grenade rolling into the Command Post entrance. Without hesitation, Sergeant Eley blocked the path of the grenade with his leg. At that moment the grenade exploded, and as a result Sergeant Eley was seriously wounded. Sergeant Eley’s gallantry and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
