The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Alfred E. Duvernay (ASN: RA-14300386), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 3d Reconnaissance Company, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 16 December 1950, near Chigyong, Korea, Corporal Duvernay distinguished himself in action against the nefarious enemy. When the company command post was attacked, Corporal Duvernay noticed his section leader had been wounded before being able to communicate with the tank section to request necessary supporting fire. Taking no thought for his personal safety although confronted with imminent danger, he forsook his covered position, traveled two hundred and fifty yards under intense enemy fire, and reported enemy positions to the tank section leader. He then aided in directing fire on the enemy and, after a few effective rounds had been placed, he attempted to return to his original position but was mortally wounded by enemy machine gun fire. As a direct result of Corporal Duvernay’s intrepid action the enemy was routed and forced to withdraw. His conspicuous devotion to duty, resourcefulness, and gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
