The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur R. Dougherty (ASN: RA-13316240), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 21 September 1950, in the vicinity of Amdong, Korea. On that date the strength of the company was low due to heavy casualties suffered in previous fighting. Private Dougherty was a member of a platoon engaged in an attack on enemy positions located on high ground. Hostile fire was intense during the advance and all non-commissioned officers of the platoon were wounded in the action. Seeing his platoon leaderless, Private Dougherty unhesitantly took charge, redeployed the platoon and led his men in a daring attack, inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy and routing him from his positions. The gallantry and determined leadership in the face of heavy odds displayed by Private Dougherty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
