The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Virgil M. Dotson (ASN: ER-14322265), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 June 1951, in the vicinity of Inje, Korea. On that date his company was in a bitter firefight on hill 451. Casualties were running high in the company and Sergeant Dotson repeatedly exposed himself in the process of removing the wounded from the hill. After four hours of continuous fighting the ammunition supply of his company was beginning to run dangerously low. Sergeant Dotson, leader of the recoilless rifle section, immediately organized his men and formed a carrying party. He carried four wounded comrades to safety and returned with a quantity of the badly needed ammunition from the forward supply point. At several points his party came under intense fire as they crossed the exposed areas, but disregarding the intense fire Sergeant Dotson and his men continued to issue the ammunition to the individual riflemen. At one point he observed unusual enemy activity to his front. With complete disregard for his personal safety he moved to a advantageous position where he could bring a murderous fire upon the enemy, thus enabling the company to hold its positions. The high devotion to duty and courageous actions of Sergeant Dotson reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
