The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Master Sergeant Anthony J. DeMarie (ASN: ER-12248320), United States Army, for heroic achievement on 12 May 1951 in the vicinity of Sagol, Korea. On that day the first section of the machine gun platoon of Company D, of which Sergeant DeMarie was section leader, was attached to Company B. Its mission was to attack the enemy on Hill 699. While Sergeant DeMarie was placing his machine guns into position, an enemy machine gun opened fire on the position of the first squad. Two men were immediately hit by the enemy fire. With utter disregard for his own safety, Sergeant DeMarie braved the hail of enemy machine gun and small arms fire to pull the two wounded men below the ridgeline and administer first aid. Later in the day while the balance of the company was pinned down by enemy fire and no cover was available for protection, Sergeant DeMarie placed his machine gun in such a position as to bring effective fire on the enemy. This gave the section and elements of Company B an opportunity to return fire upon the enemy. The heroic actions and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant DeMarie reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
