The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant First Class Thomas Patrick Conway (ASN: RA-37078347), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 6 September 1950 in the vicinity of Changnyong, Korea. On that date his company was attacking with the mission of seizing a ridge 300 yards to the front from which the enemy had a direct field of fire into the company’s sector. As the company moved forward they were met by severe mortar and automatic weapons fire from the well-entrenched enemy Sergeant Conway’s squad was pinned down by this intense fire and the entire attack was slowed to such an extent that the mission was in danger of failure. Observing this Sergeant Conway, with complete disregard for his personal safety, started to push forward alone up the hill. This intrepid action so inspired his squad that they left their positions of cover and followed him in his charge, with the result that the enemy was driven from the ridge and the objective seized. In the final phases of the attack Sergeant Conway was killed. The gallantry and high devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Conway on this occasion reflect credit upon himself and the military service.
