The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Raymond F. Conrad (ASN: 19032093), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Combat Intelligence Platoon, Headquarters, Alaska Defense Command, in action in Sarana Valley, Attu Island, Territory of Alaska, on 1 June 1943. With fellow scout to Technician Fifth Grade Edward R. Bagby, Private First Class Conrad followed the fleeting Japs around the ragged coastline to the front of Lake Nicholas, where they sighted eleven Japanese hiding under the rim of a huge shelving boulder. Private First Class Conrad climbed to the top of the rock and opened fire with his Garand rifle while Technician Fifth Grade Bagby threw grenades. Through the gallant action of both men, all eleven Japanese were killed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Conrad, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
