The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant John R. Baumberger, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 28 July 1943. While leading his squad in an attack on a well-camouflaged enemy position Sergeant Baumberger and his men were subjected to intense machine gun and mortar fire. During the action Sergeant Baumberger fell to the ground seriously wounded, but despite this he directed the reorganization of the squad, and then, unable to continue to proceed forward, helped several of the other wounded men to the rear. On arrival at a first aid station he assisted the Aid Men in dressing the wounds of his men before mentioning his own wound. By his personal courage and devotion to duty, Sergeant Baumberger contributed indispensably to the success of the attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
