The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Major Charles H. Pinkham, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 March 1865, while serving with 57th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Fort Stedman, Virginia. Sergeant Major Pinkham captured the flag of the 57th North Carolina Infantry (Confederate States of America) and saved his own colors by tearing them from the staff while the enemy was in the camp.
