The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class James M. King, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy as a member of Company A, 3d Reconnaissance Battalion, 3d Armored Division, in saving a soldier from drowning at Alexandria, Louisiana, on 3 May 1941. Private King jumped from the Pineville-Alexandria Bridge, a distance of 15 feet, into the Red River, which was at flood stage and choked with mud and debris, and rescued a soldier who had fallen from a house boat into the river and who was fighting desperately in an attempt to avoid rescue. This act was performed without thought of personal safety and at the risk of his life and the heroism and presence of mind displayed by Private King on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
