The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Marvin M. Stocking (ASN: US-55023953), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Mundung-ni, Korea. On this date, during an assault on heavily fortified enemy hill positions, Company K met heavy resistance and was immediately counterattacked by a determined hostile force. Under the fierce enemy onslaught the friendly unit was forced to withdraw in order to reorganize. Corporal Stocking, a gunner on a 60-mm. mortar, volunteered to remain behind to cover his unit’s withdrawal. Braving the intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, he remained in his position and directed heavy and accurate fire upon the advancing foe. Through Corporal Stocking’s heroic and voluntary actions, his unit was able to conduct an orderly withdrawal, and the enemy forces suffered numerous casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Stocking on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
