The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private George H. Ford (ASN: 17019448), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 744th Tank Battalion, in action against the enemy on 8 December 1944 in Germany. While serving as a dismounted Infantryman in a forward outpost in the front line, Private Ford heard that one of the men in a fox hole one hundred yards distant was seriously wounded. Immediately,. Private Ford taking a first aid packet from a nearby soldier, and under heavy enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire rushed to the wounded man in plain view of the enemy. Shielding the wounded man with his own body, Private Ford administered first aid. The wounded man was so seriously wounded that he soon died. Private Ford then rushed back to inform his platoon leader in time to halt further efforts of the medical personnel to evacuate the casualty. Private Ford’s heroic action, courage and high regard for his comrades reflect great credit upon himself and his military service.
