The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Charles T. Heinrich (ASN: 0-39014), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the night of 28 – 29 November 1950, in the vicinity of Sochang-ni, Korea, two enemy regiments attacked the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry. Colonel Heinrich effectively directed defensive artillery and mortar fire despite a direct hit on the battalion command post which cut off all communications. Colonel Heinrich, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, moved from position to position while under intense enemy assault fire to direct fire and initiate the restoration of communications. The effective fire directed by Colonel Heinrich inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy and forced the enemy to withdraw. Colonel Heinrich personally visited each company and initiated vigorous patrolling action to eliminate enemy penetrations. He also directed friendly air attacks against the enemy. Due to the magnificent leadership, courage, and professional skill of Colonel Heinrich, the enemy was defeated in its attempt to cut through the defensive positions. This heroic action reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
