The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Nicholas B. Nance (ASN: 0-2010724), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 274th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division, on 21 February 1945. With his platoon spearheading an attack on Spicheren Heights, France, Lieutenant Nance remained constantly at the head of his unit. After taking his objective with a minimum of casualties, he established liaison with supporting tanks and personally placed them in position. In the three counterattacks that followed, he moved continuously among his men and inspired them to successful defense of the sector. His gallantry in action was largely responsible for the accomplishment of the platoon’s mission.
