Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, General Orders No. 34 (July 14, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) Walter Ferrell Winton, Jr. (ASN: 0-22966), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 82d Airborne Division, in action against the enemy at Ste. Mere Eglise, Normandy, France, from 6 to 7 June 1944. On the night of D + 1, Lieutenant Colonel Winton led a patrol through German lines to Utah Beach to inform the 4th Infantry Division commander that St. Mere Eglise was in friendly hands. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Winton, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
