The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Willis E. Maglothin (ASN: 36886230), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 20 December 1944, near ****, Belgium. Private Maglothin, Light Machine Gunner, was in a position protecting a roadblock when three German vehicles approached. The vehicle, a half track and two tanks, opened fire wounding Private Maglothin with the first shell. He continued firing his gun until it had been rendered useless by the enemy fire, thus aiding in knocking out the enemy half track and the killing and wounding of over twenty Germans. Private Maglothin’s gallant action inspired the other members of the roadblock to remain at their posts until ordered to withdraw, thereby contributing greatly to the successful repulse of the enemy assault. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
