The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] William E. Kotary (ASN: 0-1299532), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 25 October 1944, near Kiekborg Woods, Holland. Attacking to clear Kiekborg Woods, Company E was isolated under heavy continuous attack, and ammunition was dangerously depleted. Captain Kotary volunteered to take several men, contact Company E and deliver ammunition. The only road was heavily mined, under constant artillery and small arms fire, nevertheless, with two men he pushed, by hand, a trailer load of 1,30-0 pound of ammunition, far beyond our front lines, making trips loaded with ammunition, enabling the unit to hold off enemy counterattacks. For ten hours he passed through enemy lines under enemy fire. His devotion to duty, gallantry and his inspiring example are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces.
