The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) George A. Johnson (ASN: 0-1055048), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 6 and 7 April 1945, at ****, Germany. First Lieutenant Johnson displayed excellent leadership abilities and initiative in personally leading the attack on numerous heavily defended strongpoints and roadblocks throughout the town killing some twenty and capturing thirty of the enemy. Just after dark, First Lieutenant Johnson personally killed five of the enemy attempting to set up a machine gun within twenty-five yards of his command post. When his position was overrun he quickly withdrew his men to a secondary position and continued the fight. The aggressive action and conduct of First Lieutenant Johnson reflects the highest credit upon himself and his organization and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the Airborne Forces of the United States Army.
