The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Sam S. Asanuma (ASN: 36667853), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 20 October 1944, near Bruyeres, France. When the carrying party of which he was a member was ambushed by an enemy patrol and two of his comrades were hit by a burst of machine gun fire, Private First Class Asanuma, with complete disregard for his own safety, rushed to the aid of the wounded men. Although he was wounded by the intense hostile fire, he continued on, but upon reaching his comrades, he found them both dead. The carrying party, inspired by this display of courage, held off the enemy attacks until reinforcements arrived, then successfully routed the enemy. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
