The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Carl A. Matter (ASN: 36690858), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 25 February 1945 in Holland. When a small group of friendly troops attempting to establish an outpost was pinned down by enemy fire from well dug in positions, Sergeant Matter, Platoon Sergeant, led his men to the assistance of the small force. Leading his platoon by the most direct route, he encountered an enemy mine field. Unhesitatingly he went ahead of his men and cleared a path through the area. Reaching the point of enemy resistance, he deployed his men and after a short but intense fire fight routed the enemy from the bunkers and trenches, relieving the pressure on the outpost group and enabling it to establish its position. The courage and soldierly ability displayed by Sergeant Matter reflect highest credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
