The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) William J. Schwent (ASN: 0-5244727), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 15 November 1968 while serving as a pilot with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Lieutenant Schwent was flying a transport mission when he monitored an emergency call of an evacuation helicopter and immediately flew to the scene of the fierce engagement. Completely disregarding the intensive enemy automatic weapons fire directed at his aircraft, he maneuvered to a small landing zone in the immediate vicinity of the battle. As the aircraft touched ground, one of the rotor blades struck a tree and was seriously damaged. After the wounded man was placed on board, he managed to lift the helicopter out of the area despite the damaged blade. Flying through a barrage of enemy fire he successfully delivered the wounded man to a medical treatment facility. First Lieutenant Schwent’s unwavering devotion to duty, disregard of personal safety and deep concern for the welfare of his comrades in arms were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
