The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Walter Wohlust (ASN: 36205273), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 304th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, on 25 February 1945 in the vicinity of Wolfeltemeburg, Germany. While under constant enemy artillery fire, Private Wohlust fearlessly attended four wounded men in a wooded area. Later he moved a wounded man into a recently captured dugout where he set up a temporary aid station and treated him. Despite his personal wounds and the danger of tree bursts from artillery, Private Wohlust repeatedly left the dugout to give aid to the wounded. Although suffering pain himself, he nevertheless continued to work alone with twenty-two patients until relieved. His inspiring courage and devotion to the welfare of his fellow men reflect great credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
