The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Arthur Patterson (ASN: 34445139), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, *** Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, on 9 November 1944, in the vicinity of Maizicross-Les-Metz, France. In the battle of the Slag Pile, near Malzicros-Les-Metz, Private First Class Patterson, an Aidman, displayed marked courage and gallantry when he made trip after trip over densely mined terrain, administering first aid and evacuating casualties. Although enemy artillery and machine gun fire was extremely severe, Private First Class Patterson did not hesitate in the face of grave danger. His cool and skillful treatment of the wounded, his never-failing eagerness to assist in the evacuation of helpless casualties, and his fearless conduct under intense enemy fire were an inspiration to the soldiers fighting around him. Private First Class Patterson’s gallant and efficient service reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
