The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William H. Massey (ASN: 34502392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with a Medical Detachment of the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of ****, Normandy, France, on 18 July 1944. Private Massey, accompanied by two other Aid Men, entered a German mine field to give medical aid to five wounded soldiers. Private Massey was fatally wounded by exploding mines as he entered the field. The gallantry of Private Massey, who unhesitatingly went to the aid of wounded comrades despite the mortal danger involved, is in accord with the military traditions of the Medical Department of the Army.
