The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Raymond Meier (ASN: 37070797), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the **** Sector, Normandy, France, 16 July 1944. When the advance of Company G, **** Infantry Regiment, was slowed down by enemy machine gun fire, Sergeant Meier crawled forward and called in German to the enemy to surrender, whereupon the enemy threw several grenades at him, none of which injured him. Having thus located the emplacement, Sergeant Meier threw a grenade into the enemy emplacement, destroying the gun and killing several of the crew, thereby enabling the company to continue its advance. Sergeant Meier’s gallantry in action is in accord with the highest traditions of the military service.
