The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Field Artillery) Robert Norton Tredway (ASN: 0-83507), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Tredway distinguished himself by valorous actions on 29 April 1967 while serving as the commander of a heavy fire team for the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. Upon receiving request from immediate assistance in attacking a Viet Cong force that had engaged a friendly unit, Major Tredway and his fire team were over the target in 7 minutes. He began conducting low level passes over the well-armed insurgents, skillfully evading intense barrages of hostile fire while his door gunners devastated the Viet Cong. Successfully avoiding friendly artillery and tank fire, Major Tredway continued to provide his gunners with an unhampered view of the aggressors until forced to withdraw in lieu of an air strike. Wisely directing his team to take up blocking positions, Major Tredway soon discovered a substantial Viet Cong force that was attempting to flank friendly elements. In complete disregard for his own safety, Major Tredway valiantly attacked the insurgents by placing aerial rockets and suppressive machine gun fire into the enemy positions. His bold, timely actions contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the hostile forces. As Major Tredway had expended his ammunition and was making a reconnaissance of the battle area, he saw several insurgent anti-tank rounds in an open area. Disregarding the possibility of enemy in the area, he landed and recovered the Viet Cong ordnance. Major Tredway’s heroic actions and outstanding flying ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
