The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Raymond E. Wolfgang (ASN: 33145066), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 45th Infantry Division in action in France on 22 June 1944. Private Wolfgang, manning his automatic rifle, was guarding his company’s left flank, and maintaining a constant, accurate fire, thus preventing the enemy from harassing the flank. All through the night, Private Wolfgang remained at his position, using hand grenades to repel the enemy infiltration tactics. This constant heroic defense was maintained by Private Wolfgang until early the next morning when he was killed. By his heroism and devotion to duty, Private Wolfgang became an inspiration to the entire company. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
