The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Edward J. Fogarty, Jr. (ASN: 0-1311180), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 20 November 1944. When his company’s position was subjected to violent enemy counterattacks, Lieutenant Fogarty crawled down the forward slope of a hill under heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire and established an observation post in an exposed position to more accurately direct the fire of his platoon. He continued fearlessly leading his men until severely wounded by direct enemy fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
