The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Denman Fowler (ASN: 0-23626), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa, on 23 April 1943. Throughout an intense enemy attack, Captain Fowler maintained high morale and fighting spirit in his command by his extreme coolness, bravery, and keen tactical judgment in the face of imminent danger. Although often fully exposed to enemy fire, Captain Fowler personally directed his company’s assault which destroyed numerous enemy tanks and mobile artillery units. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
