The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal [then Private] Joseph D. Bankston (ASN: 38194912), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Sicily, on 25 July 1943. During an advance on enemy positions, direct enemy machine gun fire forced an adjacent platoon to seek cover. Using an automatic weapon, Corporal Bankston drew the enemy fire upon himself and thereby allowed this platoon to advance and successfully destroy these positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
