The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Lawrence Wayne Bell (ASN: 42135649), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in ****, on 16 August 1944. Sergeant Bel was given the mission of placing a mine field in a strategic position in order to defend the flank of an advancing armored column. To accomplish this it was necessary for him to pass through the infantry line and move out on the highway where his movements were visible to the enemy. Just as he began the job an enemy tank appeared and opened fire, but despite this and enemy small arms fire, Sergeant Bel assisted in the completion of the installation of the mine field. His personal bravery, loyalty, and determination reflects were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
