The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Willard Holt Barnwell (ASN: 0-407293), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division in 1943 in Tunisia. His company was assigned to the mission of holding a portion of high ground. In the accomplishment of this mission, the company was under heavy enemy artillery and machine gun fire for eleven days, being neither relieved or replaced at any time during this period. Throughout this period, Captain Barnwell displayed outstanding courage and superior leadership. He continuously disregarded his own welfare by assisting in recovering his wounded and dead to the rear while under enemy fire. His aggressive leadership and bravery served as an example and inspiration to his men and were responsible for their steadfast performance of duty. The gallantry, devotion to duty and disregard for personal welfare displayed by Captain Barnwell reflect great credit upon himself and the command, and are highly commendable.
