The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Delbert E. Clegg (ASN: 37693385), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 38th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. During an advance against strongly defended enemy positions on 19 April 1945, in the vicinity of Rieder, Germany, Private First Class Clegg assumed command of his squad when his squad leader fell seriously wounded. Exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, he reorganized his squad and maneuvered it around to the flank of a machine gun emplacement. Capturing four prisoners, he then single-handedly assaulted a second gun position with grenades and neutralized the weapon. He was fatally wounded by small arms fire while returning to his unit. Private First Class Clegg’s aggressive leadership and courageous actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
