The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Harvey L. Mencke (ASN: 35062430), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany, on 18 October 1944. When communication wires were severed by intense mortar and artillery bombardment, Sergeant Mencke fearlessly crossed hazardous terrain and repaired the lines. Then, when a numerically superior German force supported by tanks launched a fierce counterattack, Sergeant Mencke repeatedly exposed himself to engage the foe and with accurate and rapid rifle fire held the opposition at bay until reinforcements arrived and repulsed the enemy thrust. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
