The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph D. Marnell (ASN: 6146021), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in North Africa and Sicily during the period from March through August 1943. When an enemy tank concentration had checked the advance of an infantry battalion, Corporal Marnell voluntarily proceeded to a position of 500 yards beyond our infantry elements and, although painfully wounded by tank fire, established radio communication, thereby enabling effective artillery fire to be directed upon the tanks. His courageously action was of material assistance in allowing our forces to seize their objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
