The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade [then Private] William F. Lawson (ASN: 31092861), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in near Faid Pass, Tunisian, North Africa, on 3 December 1942. Technician Fifth Grade Lawson and a small group of men courageously and daringly proceeded, under heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and small arms fire, to evacuate wounded personnel from the field of battle. His heroic, unselfish and inspirational deed greatly minimized loss of life and merits the highest praise. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

Lawson (ASN: 31092861), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Barrrafranca, Sicily, on 18 July 1943. During an intensive enemy artillery barrage, disregarding his own safety, Technician Fifth Grade Lawson proceeded to the aid of seriously wounded comrades and evacuated them to a place of comparative safety. His initiative and fortitude under enemy fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
